Week 1 Blog Assignment EDUC 6165- Ann Curry Effective Communicator

This week we were asked to think about someone who demonstrates competent communication within a particular context. I have ALWAYS been a huge fan of Ann Curry. I know she is no longer a Today Show host but when she was in that role, I thought she did a phenomenal job!

I find that during her interviews with people she has a way of using her verbal and non-verbal communication skills to really reach the person(s) that she is interviewing. She makes consistent eye contact with the people and often reaches out to touch the person when she speaks to them. She has a way of asking questions that makes the person and the audience feel like she really cares about what is being discussed. She talks to people not” at” them. She is able to ask questions but also show that she is listening as well.

I don’t know that I have patterned myself after Ms. Curry, but I think she is both professional and caring when she does her work. She conducts herself as a reporter in a professional manner by doing the job of getting the necessary information for viewers and also handling difficult stories in a caring and effective manner. When I speak to the parents I work with I hope that I too come across in a caring manner like Ann. I miss her interviews on NBC and I think they made a mistake by putting her on the shelf the way that they did.

  1. Thesha,

I really enjoyed reading your post this week. I agree that Ann Curry is very sensitive in the way she conducts her interviews. She definitely reflects a positive attitude and alters her communication style to appropriately fit the situation or topic being discussed, while maintaining her professionalism. I also agree that she appears to be a great listener, always appearing to be tuned in to what the speaker is saying. She is a great role model for competent communication. Thanks for sharing!
